Living Your Highest Life
Guiding Your Path to Greater Success

There are secrets to success. If you know where to look, you can find them. Learning them and remembering them are turns on your path to success. One way to find these things are in books, one of those is one that I wrote. Let me explain.

Nearly two years ago, I stood on a mountain pass saying goodbye to a friend. The day was beautiful, the summer peeking through the melting snow. We had been talking about life, skiing, and writing. In that conversation, an idea was born. The idea that became a book and the realization of a childhood dream.

Just a few months later, my book proposal was accepted by the publisher, and less than a year after that summer day, the book was in book stores. It has received universally positive reviews from readers, both those who ski and those who don't.

The title of this book is a challenge, though. It doesn't roll off the tongue. I'm not sure it does a good job describing the book, either, but that is something that you can decide for yourself. The title isn't short, though. And it's a mouthful.

You can learn to glide in life
The book is "Open Your Heart with Skiing; Mastering Life Through Love of the Turns." It is a book about skiing. It is a book about life. You will picture breathtaking alpine vistas and understand the principle of balance. You will learn how to see your path clearly and and to see the different characteristics of ski resorts around the world.

The people who have written me and reviewed the book agree that it is practical for both skiers and non-skiers, because that's how I wrote it, and according to those who have read it, I succeeded. Even my mom, who only skied a couple of times in her life and didn't really care for it enjoyed the book. In fact, she told me it was, "Better than I expected."

I think that's a compliment. That's how I'm going to take it, anyway.

Others have given me great feedback, too. As a result of reading the book, some have tried skiing for the first time. Others have tried it again. People have understood skiing for the first time through reading it. Many have had breakthroughs.

Those who haven't tried skiing and have no interest in it have grown, too. One young lady mentioned that she actually read the skiing sections and drew from the Turns sections ideas that have helped her in her work and her relationships. Other have had similar stories to tell. Some of the readers have skied with me first as an instructor or as a guide, and then bought the book to take the mountains home with them. It will give you something to think about year-round.

But, the title is still a real mouthful.

Ok, not everyone thinks so. Some women rather like it. Many people don't, though, and I don't blame them. Regardless, you can't judge a book by its cover... and this one is definitely worth a read. It is a cheap opportunity to pick up an easy read that will make a difference in your life... or someone else's.

If you're a skier who has a "significant other" who doesn't get your passion for skiing, this book will actually help them get it. If you are a non-skier with a skiing friend, here's a way to connect with them. Even if you have no interest in skiing, this book will help you understand life principles in new ways that will be easier to remember.

I haven't always skied. But ever since that first day over 35 years ago, it has taught me a lot. There were even times I didn't want to ski any more. I almost quit with frustration. I'm glad now that I didn't. In the book, you'll learn what happened to turn it around. And how that applies to your life. Skiing is one of those rare sports that is not only an enjoyable pastime, but can be much more than that. It captures you. You can touch nature. You can find yourself. You can grow. And you can be transformed by it. You can even reach the eternal.

I have been delighted and touched at the responses to reading the book. Heros of mine like Olympic medalist Deb Armstrong and Olympian Martin Bell got something from it:

What the Experts Say

"Skiing can produce such varied experiences. "A chance to meander along the flow lines of gravity, a struggle against the world's best, or an opportunity to test your own limits. The wide-open vistas of a blue sky day, or the cosseted eiderdown of the 'white room' in a snowstorm. Serene solitude, an intimate gathering of friends and relatives, or the biggest party imaginable. Chest-bursting exhilaration, or humiliation and pain. Vivid life, or the cold, black nothingness of death. "In offering us all these modes of existence, skiing is in one way unique, but in another way just an extension of the nature of our sojourn on this planet. What Steve has done so brilliantly in this book is to link everything together. "For those of us lucky enough to call skiing part of our lives, these are connections that somehow we all sensed - but could never have put into words like this book does. For those yet to discover the world of winter whiteness, this book gives a tantalizing glimpse into another universe that is worlds apart from, yet intimately related to, 'normal' life."

"Skiing offers challenges for all of us, from Olympic medalists to the novice taking her first hesitant slides down freshly groomed snow. Skiing also helps us to see more about ourselves than we might otherwise know. In this book, Steve shows us some ways of finding those connections and expanding our joy in skiing and in life. Read it and strengthen your experiences."
